Neighborhood sessions · West Loop
Family Photographer in the West Loop
A neighbourhood of brick, steel and big windows. West Loop family sessions look less like a park and more like a film still — which is exactly why families here book them.
- Urban backdrops
- Loft & condo friendly
- Mary Bartelme Park
The West Loop has a photographic advantage most Chicago neighbourhoods do not: texture. Loading docks, painted brick, steel fire escapes, the Fulton Market streetscape and the light coming down Randolph Street in the evening. Put a family in the middle of that and you get something that looks like a magazine spread rather than a park bench.
It is also where a lot of young Chicago families now live — in lofts and condos with floor-to- ceiling windows, which is a gift for indoor sessions.
Where we shoot in the West Loop
- • Mary Bartelme Park. The sculptural gates, the lawn and the skyline behind it — the most photogenic small park in the city.
- • Skinner Park and Union Park. Bigger, greener, with playgrounds; good for energetic children and a more relaxed feel.
- • Fulton Market and Randolph Street. Brick, awnings, string lights and street texture. Quietest on weekend mornings, warmest in the evening.
- • Your loft. Big windows, concrete floors and high ceilings make for calm, graphic photographs. This is the strongest indoor option in the city, especially in winter.
- • The river walk and the lake, by extension. A ten-minute drive gets you to the lakefront locations if you want water in the background.
Morning streets or evening glow
The West Loop is an east-facing neighbourhood on a grid, so the light is best in the two hours before sunset when it comes down the east–west streets. Weekend mornings give you empty sidewalks and soft, even light — the trade-off is that restaurants and shops are closed, which makes the streets feel quieter rather than livelier.
If your session is indoors, it barely matters: we will shoot when the light hits your windows, and I will ask you to send me two or three phone photos of the rooms beforehand.
In-home sessions in a West Loop loft
Loft windows are large, which means the light is bright but directional. We work with it rather than against it: children in the middle of the floor, the camera angled so the window is behind me, and the city visible in the reflection. Expect the same unstaged approach as every other in-home family session — coffee, toys, a nap, and about twenty minutes of genuine chaos that usually ends up in the final gallery.

Frequently asked questions
Where do you photograph families in the West Loop?
Mary Bartelme Park first, then Skinner Park or Union Park for children who need space, and Fulton Market or Randolph Street for a more urban look. In-home loft sessions are popular here from November through March.
Can we do an in-home session in a condo or loft?
Yes — West Loop lofts are some of my favourite indoor spaces because of the window size. Send me a couple of phone photos of your main rooms when you inquire and I will tell you the best time of day to shoot.
Is a small West Loop apartment enough for a session?
Absolutely. One bright window and a clear patch of floor is all a mini session needs. Large rooms are not the variable that matters — light and comfort are.
What about parking downtown?
Street meter parking in the West Loop can be tight on weekdays, and garage rates are high. Weekday evenings and weekend mornings are easiest. I will send a specific meeting point and a parking tip with your confirmation.
